I'm looking forward to her show at the Boston ICA this fall. They had a great piece of hers that was a four foot or so cube made of pins. That's all. No magnets, so glue, just pins pressed together into a cube that held itself.
Donovan is one of those rare avant garde artists who also has a fantastic aesthetic sense. You can appreciate the beauty, the theories or both.
I found this particular installation neat (is "neat" an outdated adjective?), but I find it hard to appreciate an artist's abilities after just seeing one work.
I saw this with D and loved the 'pin' cube. The security guard told us they need to re 'cube' the pins after awhile because they start to fall out. She also had a piece that was made by inking a series of rubber bands and using them as stamps on a piece of paper. There was something wonderfully compulsive and obsessive about the two pieces that I really loved.
